The holidays are a special time and an extra special time to volunteer. This year, get the holiday season off to a positive start by taking part in the 25th annual Family Volunteer Day. Held on November 21st – the weekend before Thanksgiving – this nationwide event is becoming a popular family tradition.

Organized by Points of Light’s generationOn, Family Volunteer Day recognizes the power of positive change brought to our communities by families who work together to make a difference.

Volunteering for the Holidays

The benefits of volunteering as a family

Volunteering is a fantastic experience for children, who benefit from giving to others by making new friends, developing new skills, and feeling more deeply connected to their community. Volunteering as a family also provides the opportunity to teach children valuable lessons about compassion and working together for a greater cause. “Volunteering together in the community is a great way to spend meaningful time together as a family,” says Sarah Fanslau of generationOn, “and it teaches children the importance of learning about and caring for their community.”

“It doesn’t take a lot of time to make a big difference.”

You don’t need to dedicate the entire day to take part in Family Volunteer Day. Many local family-friendly service projects are available and only take a couple hours of your time. Some family-friendly volunteer opportunities taking place this month include:

Coloring in gift tags for Hospice Maui

Be a Friendly Visitor for Na Hoaloha

Clean up Ukumehame Beach
